Water Supply Improvement in Mabaruma, Guyana

Providing adequate water supply in Guyana’s Hinterland is one of the biggest challenges for Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI). The geographical location of these Hinterland communities poses a challenge to find suitable water sources. This is the case of Mabaruma, which is located within the North West District of Guyana and is a municipality with approximately 4,000 persons, a hospital and schools. GWI is only able to provide 2 to 3 hours of water supply two times weekly, for the users from the current water sources. There is urgent need for additional supply of safe water to be provided daily for improving the living conditions of the citizens as well as to combat against diseases such as the dreaded COVID19. GWI has identified three (3) potential surface water sources and proposes to undertake a study and pilot project to analyze the water characteristics, propose treatment solutions including desalination and select the most suitable source to utilize for resolving this challenge.
